Early years care, learning and discovery in the heart of Castle Donington
Nightingale Nursery Castle Donington has been part of the local community since 2013.
We provide care and early education for children from birth through to starting school, with an approach that combines high-quality early years practice with opportunities for children to explore their local community, spend time outdoors and develop an understanding of the world around them.
Our experienced team takes time to get to know each child and works closely with families to provide consistent care and support throughout their time at nursery.

Our four rooms
Our four rooms provide age-appropriate care, learning and experiences as children develop from babies through to preschool.
Baby Room | Birth to 1 year
Our Baby Room provides a soft, cosy and calm environment for our youngest children.
At this stage, building secure relationships is central to children's experiences. Our practitioners get to know each baby, their individual routines, interests and needs, providing responsive care and opportunities for interaction and exploration.
We focus on the Prime Areas of Learning and Development — communication and language, physical development, and personal, social and emotional development — through play and everyday experiences.
Tots Room | 1 to 2 years
Our Tots Room provides children with opportunities to explore, experiment and develop their growing independence.
We continue to focus on the Prime Areas of Learning and Development, with plenty of opportunities for messy and sensory play.
Children can explore different textures, materials and experiences while developing their communication, physical skills and confidence.
Our practitioners follow children's interests and provide experiences that encourage them to explore, make choices and try new things.
Toddler Room | 2 to 3 years
As children become more independent, our Toddler Room provides opportunities for them to make choices and take an active role in their own learning.
Resources are accessible to children and arranged to encourage self-selection and independent play. We use open-ended resources that can be explored in different ways, allowing children to develop their own ideas.
Practitioners observe children's interests and use these to extend learning and introduce new experiences.
Outdoor play is an important part of everyday life, giving children opportunities to be active, explore and develop their confidence. Our Toddler Room has access to the upstairs garden allowing free flow between the indoors and outdoors.
Preschool | 3 years to school
Our Preschool prepares children for the transition to school, with a focus on independence, confidence, resilience and social development.
We encourage children to develop a positive “can do” attitude — having a go, persevering when something is difficult and learning that it is okay to make mistakes.
We support children to develop the skills they will need when they start school, including:
-
Independence
-
Communication and listening
-
Confidence
-
Resilience and perseverance
-
Positive social relationships
-
Early literacy and mathematical skills
-
Following instructions
-
Working collaboratively
-
The confidence to try new things
We want children to leave nursery feeling confident in themselves and ready for their next stage of learning.
We have strong links with local schools, built and maintained over the past 13 years. These established relationships enable us to work closely with schools and support the needs of children, families and the wider community.
Before and after school care
We offer before and after school care for children up to 8 years old, providing families with a convenient childcare option around the school day.
Our provision gives children a familiar and welcoming environment before school and a safe place to relax, play and spend time with friends after school.
We understand that finding childcare that fits around school hours can be challenging, so our before and after school provision is designed to provide continuity for children and flexibility for families.
Learning beyond the nursery and exploring our local area
We believe children benefit from learning about the world beyond the nursery as well as from the experiences we provide inside it.
Our location gives us opportunities to make use of the local area and the natural environment. We take children on trips and outings, giving them opportunities to explore nature, observe their surroundings and experience places and situations that are different from their usual nursery environment.
These experiences provide opportunities to develop children's vocabulary, confidence, independence and understanding of the wider world.
Connecting with our community
We value our connection with the local community and look for opportunities for children to experience and understand the world around them.
Children have opportunities to learn about familiar aspects of everyday life through community experiences and visits. This can include experiences such as bus trips and visits to the airport, helping children understand how people travel, work and live within their local area.
These experiences give children opportunities to ask questions, develop their communication skills and make connections between what they see and what they learn at nursery.
We want children to be curious about their surroundings and confident when experiencing something new.
Learning in nature
Time outdoors and opportunities to explore nature are an important part of our provision.
We use outdoor experiences and trips into the local environment to give children opportunities to observe the natural world, investigate, take managed risks and develop their physical skills.
Being outdoors also provides opportunities for children to work together, solve problems and develop their confidence and independence.
We believe that some of the best learning happens when children are given the opportunity to explore something for themselves.
A strong focus on SEND and inclusion
We have a strong commitment to supporting children with special educational needs and disabilities (SEND) and ensuring that every child can participate fully in nursery life.
Our team works closely with parents and carers to understand each child's individual needs, strengths and interests. Where appropriate, we work with external professionals and other services to ensure that children receive appropriate support.
We recognise that children develop in different ways and at different rates. Our approach is to identify children's individual needs, make appropriate adaptations and provide the support they need to make progress.
We aim to build positive relationships with families and ensure that parents and carers are involved in decisions about their child's care and development.

Supporting communication and language
Communication and language are central to children's learning and development.
We provide a language-rich environment where children have opportunities to talk, listen, ask questions and develop their vocabulary throughout the day.
We have a strong focus on developing a love of books, stories, songs and rhymes. Practitioners share books with children, introduce new vocabulary through stories and conversation, and use songs and rhymes to support listening, attention and communication.
Children's interests are used as opportunities to extend conversations and introduce new words and ideas.
Experienced practitioners
Our Castle Donington nursery benefits from a team with considerable experience.
Many of our practitioners have been with us for a long time, and some members of the team have been with us since the Castle Donington nursery first opened in 2013.
This continuity provides children and families with experienced practitioners who know the nursery, understand our approach and have developed strong professional relationships with the families we support.
We continue to invest in our staff through professional development, reflective practice and ongoing support.
Supporting children's wellbeing
We recognise that children's wellbeing is an important part of their development and their ability to learn.
Our practitioners build positive relationships with children and support them to develop confidence, resilience and positive social relationships.
Our wider team includes a Promoting Positive Behaviour Officer and Mental Health First Aider, who provide additional support to children, families and staff where appropriate.
